  • TafeSA wins award for its "Outstanding Contribution to Indigenous Interpreting"

On Monday 14 November 2011 TafeSA, Tourism, Events and Languages, won the AUSIT National Excellence Award for its "Outstanding Contribution to Indigenous Interpreting" through the delivery of the Diploma of Interpreting to the APY Lands and other parts of South Australia.

A really proud moment for TafeSA and in particular, Ina Scales, Barry McDonald and Georgina Nou, (pictured below) whose innovation and perseverance deserve recognition.

  • APY Lands Electorate Review 2011

Under the APY Land Rights Act 1981 (the Act) the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs & Reconciliation is required to undertake a review of the electoral boundaries on the APY Lands.

The electoral boundaries must be reviewed not more than 3 months before each election. With the next APY Lands general elections for the Executive Board due to be held later this year, the Government is now undertaking the review.

The electorate review provides an opportunity for APY Lands communities to speak with the State Government about the review process, to find out what it may mean for you, and for you to provide advice to the State Government. Anangu from community and homelands are invited to make verbal or written submission to either the APY Executive Board or the Department for Premier and Cabinet, Aboriginal Affairs and Reconciliation Division by the close of business on Friday 16 September 2011.

The SAAAC provides the Government with confidential advice on existing programs and policies as they affect Aboriginal people, emerging issues, development and implementation of future policies, appropriate consultation processes, maintaining links with other relevant advisory bodies.

The SAAAC has 10 members appointed by the Minister for a term of up to two years.

  • Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Food Security Strategic Plan 2011-2016

Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and Reconciliation, Grace Portolesi has announced a new comprehensive food security strategy for the APY Lands.

The Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands Food Security Strategic Plan 2011-2016 will bring together a variety of government and non government programs and will provide a further $820,000 over two years for new initiatives.

 

The strategy includes three new initiatives that focus on food production, food preparation skills, nutrition and education and these will build on the programs already run on the Lands.

 

The new initiatives will be undertaken in partnership with Aboriginal people, government agencies and the non-government sector and align with the priorities set out through the COAG national partnership with the Commonwealth Government.

 

Leanne Liddle will take up the role of Manager of the APY Food Security Strategy Project on the 4 July 2011

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander War Memorial

The South Australian Government’s Aboriginal Affairs and Reconciliation Division (AARD) of the Department of the Premier and Cabinet (DPC) is facilitating the commissioning of a significant memorial to honour the memory of, and contribution made by, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander servicemen and women in the defence of Australia.

The memorial will be located within the Torrens Parade Ground precinct, Adelaide. Fundraising to enable the memorial to be constructed has commenced and aims to achieve a total project implementation budget of $500,000.
