Aboriginal Heritage Act 1988
Respect for and recognition of Aboriginal heritage
is important for Aboriginal self-determination
and community confidence, and for the achievement
of reconciliation and pride in our collective
past.
The Aboriginal Heritage Act 1988 (the
Act) is the legislation designed to protect
Aboriginal heritage. Under this legislation,
all Aboriginal sites, objects and remains in
South Australia that are of significance to
Aboriginal tradition, archaeology, anthropology
and/or history are protected.

In November
2008, the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) agreed to a
National Partnership Agreement (NPA) on Remote
Service Delivery (RSD) to improve the delivery
of services in 29 remote Indigenous locations.
Through this NPA, the Commonwealth and States
will provide a total of $291.2 million over six
years in joint funding to improve access to
services by Indigenous Australians in remote
areas. In South Australia, the two RSD
communities are Amata and Mimili in the Anangu
Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands.
Each of the 29 communities across Australia has
developed a Local Implementation Plan (LIP) that
defines target, actions and performance
measures. In South Australia, a
State-Commonwealth Board of Management has
overseen the development and finalisation of the
LIPs for Amata and Mimili. The Board is
co-chaired by Pauline Peel, State Coordinator
General for Remote Aboriginal Services and the State Manager, Department of Families,
Housing, Community Services and Indigenous
Affairs.
The LIPs for Amata and Mimili were
finalised in late June 2010 following extensive
consultation with each community, stakeholders,
the Commonwealth Government and the Government
of South Australia. Events were held in the
communities in the week beginning 28 June 2010
to celebrate the completion of the LIPs.
